Serving at St. James

There are numerous ways to serve at St. James, and we believe everyone's talents and gifts have a place here.

The following is a list of ministries within the church along with a Point of Contact for each ministry if you would like to explore becoming involved.

​Lector  A lay person trained in reading scripture who is appointed by the Rector to read lessons or lead the prayers of the people (Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, etc.). The term is from the Latin, “to read.” There is no license required for this lay ministry.

Eucharistic Minister Lay person licensed by the Bishop to administer the consecrated elements of the Eucharist. Eucharistic ministers may be licensed to administer the consecrated bread and wine at any celebration of the Eucharist in the absence of a sufficient number of priests and deacons to assist the celebrant.

Eucharistic Visitor Lay people who are may also be licensed to go from a Sunday Eucharist or other principal celebrations of the Eucharist to share the sacrament with members of the congregation who were unable to be present at the celebration because of illness or infirmity.

Acolyte A general term which covers not only servers, torchbearers, and lighters of candles but also crucifers, thurifers, and banner-bearers.

Verger A lay minister who assists the clergy in the conduct of public worship, especially in the marshaling of processions. Vergers may be full-time or part-time, paid or volunteer. The history of the verger dates back to the Middle Ages when the verger was the “Protector of the Procession.” They would lead the way, making room for the procession to enter the church from the town square, and with their verge (mace) in hand would literally clear the way if necessary.

Usher The “Face of St. James” -  and the first person most people meet upon entering church. Ushers greet people, answer any questions, and give a Welcome Bag to new worshipers. They also collect offerings, count number in attendance, direct people to communion, and assist people in navigating the chancel. Occasionally they are asked to assist at funerals.

Junior Usher Any child who would like to assist the ushers and learn what an usher actually does.

Altar Guild A group of the parish whose ministry it is to care for the altar, vestments, vessels, and altar linens of the parish. Altar Guild members prepare the sanctuary for services, and clean up afterwards. There are four groups, with each group typically scheduled for one Sunday per month.

Flower Guild A group of the parish who prepare the flower arrangements that decorate the altar. There are four groups, with each group typically scheduled for one Sunday per month.

Livestream Technicians A group of volunteers that assist with scheduling and monitoring the live broadcasts of our church services, particularly the 10:30am service on Sundays.

Coffee Fellowship A group of volunteers with an organizer who lines up parishioners to provide simple refreshments for coffee hour following the 10:30am service during the formation year. The Church provides water, tea, and coffee.

Parish Life A group of volunteers who provide out-of-the-norm activities, such as Easter Brunch, Church Picnic, Oktoberfest, etcetera.

Hospitality Group Provides assistance with refreshments for various events like Funerals, Baptisms, and Concerts.
